Privacy Policy

Opiwine (Pty) Ltd ("Opiwine", "we", "us") respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we look after it, and the rights you have under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA). It applies to our website, our web and mobile apps, and our partner tools.

Who we are

Opiwine (Pty) Ltd is a company based in South Africa. For any question about your personal information or this policy, contact us at info@opiwine.co.za.

Information we collect

• Waiting list: your email address, and your province if you choose to share it.
• Account information: if you create an account, your name, email address and password (passwords are handled securely by our authentication provider and are never visible to us).
• Content you add: wine ratings, saved wines, itineraries, bookings, reviews and preferences.
• Partner information: if you represent an estate or venue, the business details, menus, photos and events you publish.
• Technical data: basic device and usage information needed to run the service securely, such as approximate location when you use maps or nearby features, and standard log data.

How we use your information

• To operate Opiwine and give you the features you ask for, such as discovery, cellar, bookings and maps.
• To contact you about the launch and product updates, where you have asked to hear from us.
• To respond to your messages and support requests.
• To keep the service safe, prevent abuse and improve how it works.

Your consent

We rely on your consent to send you marketing and launch updates. You can withdraw that consent at any time by using the unsubscribe option in our emails or by emailing info@opiwine.co.za. We also process some information because it is necessary to provide a service you have asked for, for example completing a booking you make with a partner.

Where your information is stored

We use Google Firebase for authentication, database and file storage, and Google Sheets for the waiting list. These providers process data on our behalf under their own security and privacy commitments. Some processing may take place on infrastructure outside South Africa. Where that happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information continues to be protected to a comparable standard, as required by POPIA.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers that help us run Opiwine (such as Google Firebase), and with a partner estate or venue when you make a booking or request with them, and only to the extent needed to fulfil that request. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.

How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as long as needed to provide the service and meet legal obligations. If you ask us to delete your information, we will do so unless we are required to keep it by law.

Your rights under POPIA

You have the right to:

• Ask what personal information we hold about you and request a copy.
• Ask us to correct or update information that is wrong or out of date.
• Ask us to delete your information, subject to any legal duty to retain it.
• Object to processing, and withdraw consent for marketing at any time.
• Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator.

Cookies and local storage

We use a small amount of local storage on your device to remember essential choices, such as your age confirmation and your app preferences. We do not use third party advertising trackers.

Age restriction

Opiwine is intended for people who are 18 years or older, the legal drinking age in South Africa. We ask you to confirm your age before using the service, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make a meaningful change, we will update the effective date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, let you know.
